This Kindle edition is features the text of the 1910 book that transformed Western medical education from a system of diploma mills which graduated physicians with little to no real training to the pedagogically sound system of Medical education seen today.

In 1908 Abraham Flexner, an expert in the field of education, was asked by Henry Pritchett, president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of teaching, to tour the medical schools of the United States and Canada and produce a report detailing their curriculum, entry requirements, size and training of the faculty, sum of endowment and how it was used, quality and adequacy of teaching laboratories, and the relation between each medical school and the hospitals.

Flexner agreed to produce the report and commenced touring all 155 medical schools in the United States and Canada. What he found was “shocking” and “disdainful.” The majority of the medical schools were seriously lacking in a number of areas, and producing doctors who were potential threats to the public welfare.

The result of Flexner’s extensive report to the Carnagie Foundation was one of the most sweeping reforms in Education that the US and Canada had ever seen. Flexner’s book caused the medical schools which had operated mainly for profit to go out of business. The medical schools which remained had the task of completely restructuring if they were to survive, and many pooled resources and consolidated into larger schools. By 1924, the number of medical schools had been cut in half, entrance and matriculation requirements had been improved, libraries and laboratories had been revived and properly stocked, and the landscape of medical education in America and Canada had been forced to adopt rigorous professional standards.

Few know about this revolution in modern medical education, yet this all happened fairly recently in history.

This Kindle edition of “The Flexner Report” features the exact text of the 1910 hardcover. The pages are slightly aged and the entire format is original.
